Lacon is a city located in Marshall County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,979. It is the county seat of Marshall County.

Lacon is located at 41°1'26" North, 89°24'28" West (41.023904, -89.407669).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.42% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,979 people, 797 households, and 540 families residing in the city. The population density is 477.6/km² (1,233.9/mi²). There are 852 housing units at an average density of 205.6/km² (531.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.09% White, 0.10% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 797 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.6 males.
